Canada's Cleanest City with Matt Horne

In this episode:

  • Vancouver - Canada’s cleanest city (6 Big Moves)

  • Renewable natural gas and diesel

  • 50% of KMs driven by electric vehicles

  • The City’s biggest emission producers

  • Green building & passive houses

Vancouver has declared that it is in a state of climate emergency. To avoid catastrophic climate change, global warming must be limited to 1.5°C. This requires slashing Green House Gas emissions by 45% below 2010 levels by 2030 and reaching net zero by 2050. Of course, it will take more than one City to make this happen. Vancouver plans to set an example for the rest of the world, and Matt Horne joins to share how this can be done.

Reducing global warming is such a massive epidemic that it is difficult to conceptualize how one municipality can make a difference. Matt emphasizes that the key is to think globally and act locally. Once you pinpoint the causes, it becomes much easier to address the issue. In Vancouver, two contributors almost exclusively produce 100% of the City’s emissions.

1) Vehicles

2) Space / Water heating

In Vancouver, the answer to such a complicated issue is really quite simple. Find alternative modes of transportation and heat buildings with renewable resources. Listen here:
