Who Is David Eby? 5 Facts You Probably Never Knew

British Columbia has a new premier-designate after a short NDP leadership race to replace the current premier, John Horgan.

Horgan has stated he will step down, paving the way for David Eby. Eby was the attorney general and minister of housing for B.C. as well as the MLA for the Vancouver-Point Grey provincial electoral district.

Who is Eby and what do we know about him? Here are five facts you may not know about B.C.’s incoming premier.

1) Eby was born in Kitchener, Ontario and studied at the University of Waterloo and Schulich School of Law in Halifax. Eby moved to B.C. in 2005.

2) He first began work in B.C. with the Pivot Legal Society in the Downtown Eastside. The organization’s goal is to represent and defend the interests of marginalized communities affected by poverty.

3) Eby is a lawyer who was called to the bar in 2005 and has worked as an adjunct professor of law at the University of British Columbia (UBC) from 2009 to 2013. He still resides on the UBC campus.

4) In 2017, Eby was made attorney general for British Columbia within the cabinet of John Horgan. In this role, he set out to reveal acts of money laundering in the province as well as tackle ICBC, a Crown corporation. Eby famously described the public auto insurance agency as a “financial dumpster fire.”

5) Eby has played and provided vocals for electro-indie rock bands, including Ladner and World of Science. At an NDP convention, Eby sang a version of Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer.”
