Open Letter to Justin Trudeau - #ERRE
In September 2015, Justin Trudeau tweeted "As Prime Minister, I'll make sure the 2015 election will be the last under first-past-the-post system." However, on February 1, 2017 Justin Trudeau released a statement saying he would not be going through with this system.
Justin,
In your mandate letter to Karina Gould, Minister of Democratic Institutions, you state “A clear preference for a new electoral system, let alone a consensus, has not emerged. Furthermore, without a clear preference or a clear question, a referendum would not be in Canada’s interest. Changing the electoral system will not be in your mandate.”
Your government hosted the MyDemocracy.ca initiative which 367k people (or about 1% of Canada’s population) participated in. Results included the following:
It is better for several parties to have to govern together than for one party to make all the decisions in government, even if it takes longer for government to get things done. – 62% agreed (29% disagreed)
Ensuring that more individuals are elected from groups that are currently underrepresented in Parliament should be a top priority. – 45% agreed (35% disagreed)
A party that wins the most seats in an election should still have to compromise with other parties, even if it means reconsidering some of its policies. – 68% agreed (22% disagreed)
A choice between a government where one party governs and can make decisions on its own or a government where several parties have to collectively agree before a decision is made? – 70% wanted several parties to collectively agree.
There should be greater diversity of views in Parliament. – 65% agreed (13% disagreed)
The results are indisputable. Clearly a consensus has emerged.
You have clearly demonstrated that you would rather continue to govern under a majority government with only 40% of the popular vote than to risk losing in the next election.
In September 2015, you tweeted, “As Prime Minister, I’ll make sure the 2015 election will be the last under first-past-the-post system.”
Justin – You still have the time and the majority of seats in parliament to make good on your campaign promise to change our electoral system. That’s why I voted for you.
Do the right thing and make the change. Otherwise I’ll work to ensure you are a one-term Prime Minister.
